Journalists receive death threats from Kochkor district akim

Coalition “For Democracy and Civil Society” expressed concerns over Kurmanbek Baiterekov’s actions, who made several threats against journalists and human rights activists.

Gulzhamal Sultanaliyeva, director of Coalition’s branch in Naryn, was talking about violations observed during the polling process on 10 July 2005 in Kochkork. Her speech was broadcast by Naryn Radio and TV Channel. In particular she touched upon administrative resource used by Kochkor district akim. Coalition observers reported that Baiterekov announced a contest among members of the Election Commission, promising to give 10 thousand soms to a district that will count highest number of votes for candidate Baiterekov.

According to Coalition leader Edil Baisalov, the akim demands that journalists and human rights activists stop criticizing him. As a result, the journalists and human rights activists had to leave the district, because of the fear of further harassment.
