Akyikat newspaper in Zhalalabat dropped its charges

Kloc’man printing company made a mistake printing a photograph of Presidents of Russia and Kyrgyzstan (Bakiyev and Putin) for Akyikat regional newspaper. The photograph demonstrated the Presidents shaking their left hands, instead of right ones. “This picture was a laughing stock of not only the Presidents, but also journalists. Circulation of the paper was distributed in the amount of 3.5 thousand copies. We had to bring the case to the court,” said Abdisharip Bekilov, chief editor for the paper. On August 7, the city court considered the lawsuit filed by the paper seeking 1.5 million soms ($37,500). However the court dismissed the lawsuit, saying that such cases between legal entities should rather be considered by inter-district arbitrage court. Later, on 10 August the editorial staff failed to file the lawsuit in the Inter-district court, because of the requirement to pay state duty on lawsuits. The state duty appeared to be higher than that affordable by the editorial board. “We had to drop our charges because of no money to pay state tax,” Abduvali Ailakov said.
