Hot News 2005 September 1 Karakol City Kenesh forced Oleg Pankratov, journalist for Novaya gazeta, to leave the session
Karakol City Kenesh decided to consider an issue “different” at a session behind closed doors and asked all people, except for the deputies, to leave the room. Oleg Pankratov, a reporter for Novaya gazeta, protested against the decision, referring to the Constitution, laws of the Kyrgyz Republic, including law “On Local Self-Governments and Local State Administration.” According to the law (article 21) sessions should be held open for all. Nonetheless, Kenesh chairman Aftandil Abdykadyrov, said he would call the police, if the journalist stays in the room, and then the police will force the journalist out of the room. The journalist had to leave the session. According to unchecked sources, the deputies discussed removing deputies from state and municipal offices, as well as a complaint filed by Karakol residents against Kenesh chairman.
