Hot News 2005 October 7 The regional court upheld the decision of the lower court
Batken regional court, presided over by Turgunbayev, upheld the decision of the lower court, finding Akmatov, chief editor of Batken tany newspaper, guilty and obliging him to pay 5000 soms fine ($125), and the paper to retract a 15 April article. Furthermore the court obliged the journalist, who wrote the article, Tagayev, to pay 1500 soms ($38), instead of 7000 soms, ordered by the lower court. The lawsuit was filed by Illimidin Abdrasulov, rector of Batken State University, against Adylbek Akmatov and Batken Tany newspaper, seeking 200 thousand soms ($5000) in damages from the paper and 200 thousand soms ($5000) from Akhmatov. The lawsuit was based on an article published in the paper on 15 April, 2005. The plaintiff claimed the article insulted his reputation and reputation of university’s faculty.
