Hot News 2005 October 10 President of Radio Free Europe Thomas Dine spoke of the work and role of Radio Azattyk
Thomas Dine, President of the Radio Free Europe was speaking at a press conference about the work and role of Radio Azattyk in Kyrgyzstan. He said “Our daily goal is to inform people about what is going on. We are committed to principles of journalism, and Radio Azattyk was not on any side during the March events. We just gave people an opportunity to know all viewpoints.” According to him, if over 5% of population listen the radio, it is successful. Based on a research, Azattyk listeners reached 15%, and sometimes 25%. After the March revolution, the radio faced reduction in funding, so that it stopped broadcasting through medium and ultra-short waves, giving rumors that it will soon disappear from the Kyrgyzstan media market. The President Dine denies the rumors. The Radio continues to broadcast through the waves of Almaz Radio Station to Bishkek, Osh and Naryn, and through Salam Radio station in Batken.
