The OSCE center in Dushanbe is concerned about the mounting pressure, being exerted by local authorities on Tajik mass media

On August 25, 2004, the OSCE center in Dushanbe distributed a statement regarding private publishing company “Dzhiyenhon” closed by tax bodies recently. The publishing company published 4 independent newspapers, which were highly critical of the Tajik Government and President. The statement mentions that today’s situation, where several independent newspapers have no opportunity to be published, hampers development of free speech and press plurality, which are the key conditions for democracy.

“In recent years, in Tajikistan there were opened several new prints, it was a positive sign in the field of press freedom. However some of them have been facing many different troubles, which indicate a step back”, - Yves Bargain said.
