Hot News 2004 March 31 Association of Judges in Sughd region sues Varorund newspaper
Varorund, a socio-political newspaper, is co-defendant in a civil action brought by the Association of Judges of the Republic of Tajikistan for first time in the history of independent mass media of Tajikistan. Sughd Regional Court’s Collegium for Civil Cases held first hearings in the case against Faiziniso Vohidova, head of the Center for Support of Legal and Economic Reforms in Sughd region and Varorund’s editorial board, which published an article “Judges as guinea-pigs”. According to Rano Bobodjonova, the Association filed a lawsuit based on “protection of honor and dignity…” in the court”, instead of trying to settle the dispute peacefully first. According to article 24 of the law “On Print and Other Media,” the plaintiff should have demanded that the editorial board publish a retraction first, and then, if the board failed to retract the article within a month, the plaintiff should have filed a lawsuit in the court on March 31. As the plaintiff’s representative failed to appear before the court, the court hearing has been delayed to 7 April 2005. It is worth mentioning that the Association was angrier at the name of the article, than the content.
