April 1

TV Somoniyen was deprived of the right to continue broadcasting

Abdulfaizov Barokatullo, a Licensing Commission secretary, informed a staff reporter for the NANSMIT’s monitoring service, at a Committee on TV and Radio Broadcasting’s session, held on 25 March in Dushanbe, that the Licensing Commission under the Committee on TV and Radio Broadcasting decided to suspend TV Somoniyen, because of expiry of its license, which had been extended to 31 December 2005. A 1 April session, scheduled by the License Commission to consider prolongation of the license, was canceled. Ikrom Mirzoyev, a head of the TV Somoniyen, believes that the real reason was Mr. Abdulfaizov, who deliberately misled the Licensing Commission members, claiming there were some violations in the TV Somoniyen’s constitutive documents. Sherali Nadjmitdinov, a deputy Minister of Communication, stood against the prolongation as well; in particular, he informed that the TV Somoniyen failed to pay taxes to use radio frequencies.
