Vahhob Odinayev, deputy editor for Nerui Sukhan newspaper, was sentenced for negligence

Vahhob Odinayev, deputy editor for Nerui Sukhan newspaper, was given a one-year rehabilitation order on 31 May, according to Asomiddin Abdurahimov, a judge of Firdousi court in Dushanbe. Furthermore the court ruled that 30% should be deducted from his monthly salary to the state budget. Abdurahimov said the journalist who is known as Vahhobi Latif, had published libelous materials publishable by article 322 of the Criminal Code of the RT (negligence).

On February 22, Firdousi District Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against the journalist of insulting honor and dignity of Negmatullo Abdulloyev, head of the Law Department at the Tajik National University. The lawsuit is based on an article “Rakhmonov kai Putin meshvad?” in Nerui Sukhan newspaper (#07(53) of 12 February 2004), claiming that Abdulloyev took bribes from the law students. The newspaper failed to find a journalist that had written the article.

The judge said also that Vahhob Odinayev has a right to appeal the order of the Firdousi District Court.
