Hot News 2005 June 6 Journalist Tolibov’s case is under control of the General Procuracy
Minbari khalk newspaper (People’s tribune) – Tajikistan National Democratic party’s body, reported the arrest of journalist Tolibov on 4 June 2005. Minbari Khalk mentioned the editorial staff have not so far received formal reply from the competent authorities to the articles that Tolibov published earlier in the paper. “Tolibov is charged with hooliganism. It’s hard though to believe that the journalist behaved in this way. More so because Tolibov said to the editorial staff several times that “the prosecutor threatens him with imprisonment.” If his arrest is linked to his critical materials, then it’s rough violation of freedom of speech and democratic principles. And therefore, we cannot leave the journalist alone to solve his problems. It was the first arrest of journalist in recent years,” the publication says On 2 June, law enforcement officers published an article on Tolibov’s arrest, entitled “Has a journalist been arrested? A state official? A hooligan?” in Asia –plus newspaper. The paper expressed its concerns over the current situation. The National Association of Independent Mass Media’s executive director in Soghdy region, Rano Bobodjonova, called the Soghdy Regional Prosecutor’s Office on 6 June to ask about the petition that the association had recently sent; the petition was in protest against the measure of restraint applied to the journalist. She was informed that the petition would be considered within the terms prescribed by the law. On 5 June the General Prosecutor’s Office should have finished considering a report filed on 10 May by Tolibov over the unlawful arrest and criminal action brought against him by prosecutor of Anininsk district. Head of General Procuracy’s Legal Department and Information Center, Sabagul Kurbonova, talking to the NANSMIT staff, confirmed that the Tolibov’s report had been sent for consideration to Soghdy Regional Procuracy. However they haven’t received formal reply so far.
