Hot News 2005 July 29 Journalist Nuriddin Amonov is facing criminal charges
On July 22, Faiziddin Bobobekov, a Firdavsi district judge, summoned Nuriddin Amonov, who worked as a journalist in the past, to court. He is facing criminal charges under article 135, part 3 and article 136, part 2 (defamation and insult). The judge refused to give details of his case. In January, 2005, the court ruled that Nuriddin Aminov should pay 50 thousand somoni ($16 thousand) in damages to Abdullayev, deputy chair of the Judicial Law Department in Tajik State National University. The charges stemmed from Amoniv response to the articles published in Nerui Sukhan newspaper. He tried to appeal the decision to two city courts and recently took the case to the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tajikistan. The civil action resulted in such a tough verdict; soon Aminov will have to face criminal charges.
